Mental illness is an infirmity that has many peaks and valleys. Statistics affirm that 1 in every 4 people will experience mental illness in their lifetime. When we are at our worst, where else can we turn but to those we love. What if our loved ones cannot bear our frailties in our wounded spirit?
Proverbs 18:14 mentions a wounded spirit – a spirit that has been hurt, damaged, broken and alone and is trying hard to survive.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. 14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear. 15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge – Proverbs 18:13-15
Let me tell you who can bear a wounded spirit.
The Lord Jesus Christ.
He died for all of our sins, all of our frailties, all of our griefs, all of our worries, all of our burdens. If anyone knows what you are going through right now, it is Jesus. No one will ever experience what he did, physically and spiritually. He even died for those who would hate and reject him, even in a day and age when God is taken out of everything, including education.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you – 1 Peter 5:6
We might turn to our GPs, our psychologists, psychiatrists, or whoever else, but remember who cares for you the most – your creator, the LORD Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, Jesus Christ.
When you feel alone and you don’t know where you can turn, turn to Jesus. He is waiting with his loving arms outstretched for you to turn to him. Trust him today for salvation. Trust him today for eternal life, because Jesus is a living God who bore all of our sins on the cross, was buried, and resurrected on the third day. All other gods are dead, but we rejoice in the only Living God who gives eternal life to those who believe in what he has done for them.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, the crushed in spirit. Take heart in this and let the Lord lift you up.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit – Psalm 34:18
